Making Reading Dementia-Inclusive
A myth about people living with dementia is their disinterest or inability to read. Studies have shown quite the opposite. However, people with a dementia diagnosis can have difficulty reading traditionally formatted publications and may give up reading as a result. Learn how design and formatting are being used to help make reading more accessible for this community and some tips to help your loved ones access the written word.
Nikki Jardin is the publisher of Mirador Magazine - an award-winning periodical that is formatted for people living with cognitive change. Nikki also cared for an Aunt for many years who was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer's Disease. Nikki has been deeply involved in this community for nearly 10 years and has presented on this topic at the New England Library Association Conference in October 2024, and in April of 2025 at the Washington Library Association conference. Nikki also gave a presentation about Art and Design for Dementia-Friendly Publications at the Lake Oswego Art Festival in 2023 and has been a guest on more than a dozen podcasts on this subject.
This event will be held in the Carnegie Room.
