About the Committee
The Historic Preservation Committee supports the City related to the City's Historic Resources. Specifically, the HPC provides a quasi-judicial recommendation on listings to the local historic register and special tax valuations as part of being a Certified Local Government in the State of Washington. The HPC may conduct limited scoped reviews on departures from design standards in the historic district.
These design guidelines are established for the following purposes:
- To supplement land use regulations, promoting historic preservation while encouraging and promoting the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of Port Townsend.
- To advocate for historic preservation in urban design decisions.
- To provide guidance to applicants in choosing appropriate treatments.
The Historic Preservation Committee also:
- Provides information to the public on resources available to preserve and restore historic properties.
- Provides information on tax incentives for preserving historic resources and reviews applications for special tax valuations.
- Reviews and comments on land use regulations, developments and municipal improvements as they relate to historic resources.
- Assists with historic property surveys.
Explore the history of your house by searching the Washington Information System for Architectural and Archeological Records Data (WISAARD). It includes information and images of nearly 1,000 Port Townsend properties.
Public comment will also be accepted through the Public Comment Submission form and will be included in the meeting record, provided submissions are received two hours before the start of each meeting. Please submit public comment at Public Comment Submission (fillout.com). Persons wishing to mail in public comment can do so by sending comments to City Hall at 250 Madison Street, Port Townsend, WA 98368. Please make sure "Public Comment" is clearly visible as part of the document.
