Current Transportation Projects

For 2025, the City of Port Townsend continues to invest in improvements to our local streets. These improvements include, but are not limited to, road resurfacing, chip sealing, pavement repairs (such as pothole patching), rehabilitation, and stormwater upgrades. We are paving the way for smoother streets and safe travels.

We are working on an interactive map to show you what’s coming down the road. The map is a work in progress and will be updated as projects are planned:

Investing in Our Streets

The City of Port Townsend is deeply grateful for the vital grant funding provided by Washington State's Transportation Improvement Board (TIB). TIB is an independent state agency that funds high-priority transportation projects to enhance the movement of people, goods, and services throughout the state. The board distributes grant funding, derived from three cents of the statewide gas tax to cities and counties for transportation projects.

In recent years, TIB's support has been instrumental in advancing several key projects in Port Townsend. For instance, in November 2024, the City was awarded a $2.99 million Multimodal Improvements Grant to fully repair the subgrade and surface of Lawrence Street, along with sidewalks, between Harrison and Walker Streets. Additionally, a $260,000 pavement preservation grant was secured for chip seal paving along sections of F Street and San Juan Avenue.

By leveraging local funds with TIB grants, the City can maximize every dollar to repair aging infrastructure, build complete streets, and enhance non-motorized and ADA facilities. We sincerely thank TIB for their continued partnership in helping us invest in a transportation system that reflects the values and needs of our community.

Funding for these transportation projects comes from a variety of sources, reflecting the City of Port Townsend's commitment to investment in road infrastructure. Primary funding includes grants from state and federal agencies, local property taxes, Real Estate Excise Tax (REET), and revenue generated by the Transportation Benefit District (TBD), approved by Port Townsend voters. Together, these funding streams allow the City to maintain, rehabilitate, and improve streets and stormwater facilities that benefit the community as a whole.

The City of Port Townsend is excited to announce partnership with Jefferson County to complete numerous road projects around the City that will benefit the community of Port Townsend. Drainage improvements will include road shoulder work, ditching, drainage structure modifications, and culvert installations.

San Juan Avenue and F Street (Current Status: Active)

This project involves roadway preservation and surface improvements on San Juan Avenue and F Street. This will be accomplished by removing trees that have damaged the pavement, repaving sections of asphalt, application of chip seal, and painting new traffic markings.

Both San Juan Avenue and F Street are now over 20 years old since their last resurfacing. This is well past the typical interval for preservation treatment of a roadway. With the application of chip seal, we will extend the life of both of these streets another 15-20 years so that you can continue to smooth streets in the future.

Project is tentatively scheduled as follows:

Road preparation (includes paving and tree work) May-June 2025

Chip seal application July-August 2025

Paint new traffic markings September 2025

Total project cost is approximately $418,550. Funding consists of $260K Transportation Improvement Board grant funding and $170,000 in City TBD funds.
